The splitter that Le Prevo sells is only £75 - it's a 4" one and I don't think will last as long as the £320+ osbourne/dixon ones, but it sounds like it'll do it's job.
Apparently it's made in the far east, and is 'sheet metal' rather than cast, hence the vastly reduced price. Other than that, the v. helpful Le Prevo man described it as working in the same way as the osbourne one, and reckons they've been selling them for years and had no negative feedback yet...
I'm getting one within the next few weeks, so I'll let you all know whether it's actually worth it or not.

It will be interesting to hear what you think about it.
Apparently the cheap one that Tandy's have in their catalogue is no longer available and they don't stock the spare blades either.

Well, it arrived and I'm very pleased with it! Plenty wide enough for my use, easy to use, seems good quality, and I'm sure will last a fair few years!

Hi. There is another way of splitting leather that is very cheap. Hewitt's the book binders have the details on their web site. www.hewit.com Look in the tools section. It involves buying a spoke shave( a small carpenters tool) Turn the blade over and regrind it down. Not as complex as it seems. Then you clamp one end of your bit of leather, and drag the spoke shave the length of the leather and take off as much as you require. Really only good for straps. I find that it works best if the tool is held at an angle. Jim

I had a bit of luck the other day. I logged onto ebay and saw that there was a Dixons 8" leather splitting machine up for auction. There was only 2 hours to go so I waited till the last 20 seconds and bid for the splitter, and got it for £87. I think that they are about £400 new. I went to Cordwainers to collect it, it is in first class condition and I was shown around the work shops which was very interesting.
