 Hound / whippet collars
« Thread Started on Dec 3, 2005, 5:55pm »

I've been invited to have a stall at a 2-day dog show ran by the local greyhound rescue club ;D which I'm really chuffed about - only trouble is, I want to have a range of collars and leads available for sale on the weekend (June, so I have LOADS of time!) - but I don't know how to size this type of collar?

What sort of widths should the widest point be? What widths are most popular for the buckle / strap? (I was thinking 3/4" as they have such refines heads - not like our fat labs!)

And then what length collars overall?!

I'd really appreciate any suggestions, I'm a bit in the dark here!

Ahhhh beaten out of me...

I do whippet collars around 1 1/2" wide and most greyhound/lurcher collars 2", 2 1/2" for the really BIG beefy bull x types.
All the ones i have done have gone down to a 3/4" strap excepting one tiny whippet collar which i did a 1/2" strap for.

That's what I did, Josie, and it gave me some great idea. It really wakes you up to how poor the quality on a lot of collars and leads is.

I feel very proud of myself when i've stitched something by hand, even when is seems like such hard work, at least I know my work looks good and the stitching is neat and the buckle is firmly in place.

Its quite a good confidence booster when my fingers are hurting and i'm thinking "Is it all worth it?" (It definitely is!)

Hi Becky - I have been making dog collars for a couple of months now and found that using 3/4 leather with a 5/8 solid oval buckle looks nice. As the buckle is slightly smaller then the leather I cut a slight half moon out of both sides of the leather where the buckle lies, I also gently taper the leather about half way down the length to the end of the which gives a really nice effect when the collars is fastened. - I have some pics but am don't know how to load them onto this site - do you know how I do this?

I usually cut the length of the collar required then an extra 3.5 ins to to turn back for the buckle and D ring fitting. Also I have seen a website which sells whippet collars - will try and find it and send you the details as it has a size chart and different types of collars mainly for greyhounds/whippets.

That's fab Anna, thank you! I've done a fair few flat collars, but need to get the hang of hound collars now!
